Cycling trend emerges as UK consumers become more health and eco-conscious

As the coalition government begins to push heavily cutting the UK’s carbon footprint, recycling, renewable energy and alternate modes of transport have become hot topics on the agenda.

With London Mayor Boris Johnson working alongside city legislators to make bicycle travel safer, more people are beginning to opt to cycle to work and save money on petrol and the environment. As the upcoming VAT increases paired with the persistent recession strain UK consumers pocketbooks, bicycle travel and public transport are becoming more widespread.

Environmental groups have been touting road bikes for years, despite a survey in 2008 by the Department of Transport that indicated bicycle use was on the decline. A recent resurgence in its popularity can be seen, however, as the climate change debate puts the environment back on everyone’s minds.

According to the survey, in 2008 just eight per cent of commuters used their bicycles frequently, and the majority polled admitted using their bicycles an average of less than once each year. However, as consumers move towards a more health and environmentally conscious mindset, petrol-less travel is becoming more and more popular.

As the trend keeps spiking, websites are showing up all over the internet to offer advice and product information. Road-bikes.co.uk has been developed to cater to those that have already purchased a road bike or those that are in the market for road bikes. Offering numerous literature on maintenance and available products, the website is a valuable resource for those looking to travel by bicycle more often.
