City Car Club and Cardiff Council Partner to Ease Congestion
Under a new £120,000 program, Cardiff council is seeking to stop traffic congestion. The council has teamed up with City Car Club to provide 10 low-emission cars that locals can hire by the hour. The vehicles will be located in and around the city centre starting in October.
City Car Club runs similar hourly hire initiatives in other UK cities. It is the hope of the council authority that the vehicles will encourage families to get rid of their second cars so that traffic jams across the capital will be eased.
Councillor Delme Bowen, the transport chief, says that the club is another vital part of their work to keep Cardiff on the move. By providing cars for hourly rentals in the city, they are giving people an alternative to owning their own vehicle.
People that want to use the cars will be given a membership smart card after registering on the car company’s website. This will unlock the car and members will enter their pin number into the computer on board to get to the keys in the storage box.
In exchange for the 10 cars, the council says that they will fund City Car Club for two years at a cost of £60,000 per year. This will be done under the joint Assembly Government-funded Sustainable Travel City initiative.
Many new alternatives to traveling by car have been introduced through the £14 million Sustainable Travel program. This includes a free bike hire scheme that saw OYBike provide 45 cycles last September. There is also a plan for electric buggies for shoppers that have mobility problems.
