Katie Holmes Divorces Tom Cruise

It’s been revealed lately that 33-year-old actress Katie Holmes has decided to divorce actor Tom Cruise. Since the court papers were filed in New York, Katie nor her attorneys have commented about the reasons. However, according to a source, her decision was largely based on not wanting her 6-year-old daughter, Suri, to be raised on the beliefs and practices of Scientology, for which Tom is a prominent follower.

The insider says that the divorce would focus less on financial terms and more on the custody of Suri and how she will be raised. The hope is that the custody arrangement can be settled privately through various attorneys, the source added.

Katie has retained two prominent law firms which specialise in wealthy separations. New York attorney Allan E. Mayefsky has dealt with several splits like this, including the divorces of television anchor Joan Lunden, model Christie Brinkley and a financier from Manhattan who had been ordered to pay his ex $44 million. New York divorce lawyer Jonathan Wolfe, who has also been retained by the actress, says Katie’s top concern has always been and remains in the best interest of Suri. He has called the separation a private and personal matter.

Bert Fields, the longtime legal representative for Tom, says that he can’t comment on if the couple signed a prenuptial agreement. Everything will come out, and he hopes the proceedings can move forward without bitterness. He hopes this won’t be a quarrelsome matter, he added, noting that he knows Tom particularly isn’t a contentious person.
