BT’s super-fast broadband plans

July 15, 2008

BT, the UK telecoms provider, have announced plans to have “super fast” broadband in as many as 10 million homes by 2012.

BT are proposing a £ 1.5 billion investment in the fibre-optic based technology, which would provide top internet speeds of 100 MB/s (megabits per second). They have said the technology has the potential to deliver speeds of up to 1,000 Mb/s in the future.

The telecoms giant has said the plans are bold and the investment was dependant in a “supportive and enduring” regulatory environment. BT wants to work with local and regional bodies to decide when and where the super fast broadband will be introduced.

Chief executive of BT, Ian Livingstone said “Our aim is that urban and rural areas alike will benefit from our investment.”

Super fast fibre based broadband will allow customers to run multiple applications at once. It will also off vastly improved upstream speed, allowing customers to post videos or use high definition video conferencing.

“Broadband has boosted the UK economy and is now an essential part of our customers’ lives. We now want to make a step-change in broadband provision which will offer faster speeds than ever before,” Mr Livingstone added.

BT has said they are planning to talk to regulator Ofcom to establish the framework it believes is essential to enable the programme progress. BT added “These include removing current barriers to investment and making sure that anyone who chooses to invest in fibre can earn a fair rate of return for their shareholders”.
