Supermarkets to lower petrol prices
July 22, 2008
Three of Britain’s biggest supermarkets have said they will lower the price of petrol.
Asda, Sainsburys and Morrisons are all due to introduce price reductions on fuel or schemes to save money on fuel.
Asda have said they will reduce the price of unleaded petrol and diesel by 3 pence per litre. Morrisons also said they would cut the price of petrol and diesel by 4 pence per litre. Sainsburys have said it would try and match its rivals locally and offer an extra 5 pence off per litre for customers who have spent £50 or more in store.
Consumers have seen oil prices soar which has pushed the fuel prices up.
Asda has said the reduction in price will be from Tuesday. Asda’s trading director David Miles said “We are seeing a more stable reduction in oil prices, allowing us to pass on the savings to customers. We urge other retailers to follow our lead at a time when customers need as much help as possible.”
Morrisons price change will be effective form Monday “ensuring customers reap the benefit by passing on the saving quickly, for cheaper prices at the pump.”
Sainsburys fuel promotion will begin on Thursday 24 July and ends on Thursday 7 August.
In a statement Sainsburys said “Our customers can reap an even bigger reward because we are running a 5p off per litre promotion when they spend £50 or more in-store and they will earn Nectar points as well.”
