Google top UK brand list

July 24, 2008

According to a consumer survey, Google has become the UK’s top brand, moving two places up from last year.

Google beat Microsoft and Mercedes Benz to gain the top spot. The internet search engine also topped a poll of “superbrands” earlier this year.

There were no supermarkets in the top 100 list of brands. This is thought to be due to the rising food costs and a drop in consumer confidence.

In the leading supermarkets Asda dropped 253 places, Tesco 230 places and Sainsburys 194 places compared to the 2007 survey.

Chairman of the Superbrand Council, which commissioned the research, Stephen Cheliotis said “Lifestyle brands, particularly those in the technology sector, have considerably more sway with the public than everyday staples such as the supermarkets, which now seem further than ever from the affections of the British people. As the spectre of rising food costs continues, they are likely to come under further scrutiny. ”

He added “The results are also a further sign that Google is continuing its dominance in the UK. It is clear that Google is the brand that people value at work and in their personal lives.”

The superbrands Council is made up of marketing, advertising and media experts. These experts compile a list of over 1,000 brands according to quality, reliability and distinctiveness. This list is then passed on to consumers to rate.
