Asda No2 online grocer overtaking Sainsburys

July 28, 2008

Asda has overtaken one of their main rivals Sainsburys for the first time and has become the UK’s second biggest online retailer.

Asda, who are owned by Wal-Mart, saw a 71.8% rise in its home shopping grocery sales, compared to the same 12 week period last year.

Tesco are still the UK’s number one online retailer by far.

This latest news will put even more pressure on Sainsburys to step up a gear in the online market. Sainsburys online sales grew by just 17.3% over the same period of time as Asda’s growth.

Asda has not commented on any comparison to Sainsburys but the supermarket chain did confirm the sales growth. Chief executive of Asda, Andy Bond, said last year that they had been slow to exploit the potential of home grocery shopping, but has since then been expanding rapidly.

Sainsburys didn’t comment on any competition with Asda but did say that their total online sales - as opposed to a 12 week period - were ahead of Asda’s.

Sainsburys has suffered technical problems with their website but the new figures relate to before the problems.

Asda have got plans to relaunch their website on a new platform.
