Premier Inn reported sales growth of 6.2 per cent for the 50 weeks to February 12 - above the 4.9 per cent seen by the group overall, but below the 8.5 per cent sales growth reported in December.
Whitbread’s annual results which will be reported on Tuesday are likely to show only a modest growth in profits.
The group is expected to post underlying pre-tax profits of around £221.4m for the year to February 28, compared with £210.3m the previous year.
Whitbread, which owns the hotels chain Premier Inn as well as coffee business Costa and restaurants Beefeater and Brewers Fayre, has put its faith in the strength of its brands in the value for money sector.
But it said in December it would curb expansion plans this year despite “robust” trading - cutting spending by half to around £170m - and since the beginning of 2009 the trading picture has become more gloomy.
In March’s trading update the firm reported lower occupancy rates at Premier Inn and said recent like-for-like sales had been “predominantly negative”.
