McDonalds create 4,000 new jobs in the UK

McDonalds, the world’s largest fast food chain, has launched a recruitment drive to create 4,000 jobs in the UK. They say this is due to increasing demand for their food.

McDonalds said it needs to increase its workforce because they are now catering for two million more customers a month. The increase is attributed to modernized branches and menu changes.

The firm, last year, launched a campaign to change the dictionary definition of the term “McJob”.

The Oxford English Dictionary defines it as: “An unstimulating, low-paid job with few prospects, esp. one created by the expansion of the service sector.”

McDonalds started a petition to have it changed. The petition was signed by 100,000 people,, 35 MP’s and high profile business leaders.

The new advertising programme will use the term “McJob” in a positive light and highlight the benefits of working for the chain.

Senior vice president at McDonalds UK & Northern Europe, David Fairhurst said “This campaign is an important milestone in the evolution of McDonald’s recruitment advertising - signaling a more confident and assertive attitude towards the ‘McJob’ term.”

McDonalds has recently refurbished half of its 1,200 branches and has said they are on track to complete a £40m investment across 200 “Drive Thru” restaurants by the end of this year. They also plan to open 10 new restaurants in the UK this year.
