State of Play, the political drama, has topped the box office charts in the UK after being released for only a week. The thriller is based on the BBC drama series and has taken the lead with £1.5 million in ticket sales, knocking Monsters vs Aliens from the top to the 2nd spot.
The movie stars Russell Crowe, Ben Affleck, and Dame Helen Mirren. Crowe’s role is a veteran reporter trying to find out the truth behind the murder of a mistress of a congressman. Originally, Brad Pitt was to be the star in the film, but he pulled out of the project due to concerns over the script. State of Play was directed by Kevin MacDonald, who also directed The Last King of Scotland.
The only other new movies to show in cinemas during the week in the UK and Ireland were The Uninvited and Observe and Report, which made it to the top 10 box office chart at 7th and 8th respectively. However, In the Loop, a satirical comedy based on The Thick of It, performed well, being the only previously released movie to climb the charts from 8th to 6th, while all the others were pushed down the list. The film was only shown on 151 screens, which is less than half of its rivals.
Coming in at 3rd on the box office top 10 was Fast & Furious with £1.05 million. 17 Again was listed in the 4th spot at £1.03 million, while the 5th spot was taken by I Love You, Man with £708,071. Other films on the top 10 box office charts were Race to Witch Mountain and The Boat that Rocked, placing at 9th and 10th respectively.
