Sainsbury open its first ‘green’ store

August 18, 2008

The supermarket chain J Sainsbury is set to open its first green store in Dartmouth, Devon tomorrow. The flagship store is expected to eventually become the model for all its new supermarkets.

The store has been built from timber rather than steel and it will be heated by a biomass boiler running on wood chips, which will be locally sourced. The boiler uses no gas and electricity used from the national grid will be halved. Rainwater will be used to flush lavatories and for cleaning.

The construction was also done in an environmentally friendly manner, with 90% of the waste from the building being recycled.

The store is expected to save Sainsburys about a third on energy bills.

The grocery company said that all new future stores will incorporate as many of the new green features from the Dartmouth store as possible. They also said that two supermarkets a year and one convenience store would look to “stretch” the company’s thinking on environment by testing new environmental technologies.

The retailer wants to stress that the Dartmouth store is not just a concept store to show what can be done but will be used as a template for new stores.

Neil Sachdev, commercial director at Sainsburys said “This is not a showcase for the sake of having a showcase.”
