Apple’s iPod Nano spark fears as ‘defective batteries’ overheat

August 21, 2008

New safety fears over the Apple iPod Nano music player were revealed when it emerged two small fires had been caused, possibly by a defect with the players’ battery.

Both incidents happened in Japan.

A news paper was scorched in one of the fires and in the other a woven straw mat was burned. Nobody was injured however.

A member of Japans trade ministry, Hiroyuki Yoshitsune said it had received a similar complaint in March about sparks coming from a Nano.

It is suspected that all three had a defective lithium-ion battery.

The two cases that caused minor fires involved Nano’s with model numbers MA099 and MA005.

Both the MP3 players were twisted out of shape due to the heat and were unusable after the event, said the ministry.

The Japanese government and Apple are working together to investigate the problem.

A ministry spokesman said “We are not in the position to speculate on the outcome of the investigation. But after several incidents like these, it would be appropriate for Apple to take some measures to raise the public’s awareness”.

Apple has faced problems in the past with its ever popular iPod Nano. There have been complaints that the screen cracked easily. The electronics giant claimed it was only a single batch that was faulty.
