RBS and NatWest account details sold on eBay
August 28, 2008
Up to one million NatWest and Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) customers personal bank account details have been found on a computer which was sold on eBay for £35.
The computer was sole “inappropriately” sold by an employee at an Essex based company Graphic Data.
The information on the computer is thought to include names, addresses, mobile phone numbers, bank account numbers, mobile phone numbers and also mothers’ maiden names and even signatures. It also contained sensitive balance transfer information about American Express credit card customers.
An IT expert bought the computer and discovered the information on the hard drive.
RBS own NatWest and a spokeswoman for RBS confirmed customers’ private details had been compromised.
RBS said in a statement “Graphic Data has confirmed to us that one of their machines has been inappropriately sold on via a third party”.
“As a result, historical data relating to credit card applications of some of our customers and data from other banks were removed. We take this issue extremely seriously and are working to resolve this regrettable loss of Graphic Data as a matter of urgency.”
It is not clear yet whether customers whose details have been exposed will have to change accounts or credit cards.
The companies that are involved in this latest data blunder could be forced to pay a fine. Nationwide was ordered by the Financial Standards Agency to pay £980,000, after a laptop containing sensitive information was lost last year.
