‘Relapse’ Lyrics Defended by Eminem
With every new Eminem album there is going to be some controversy over some of the explicit and harsh lyrics that he uses. It is just inevitable that someone out there will not like something he says, and the new Relapse album is no different.
Eminem told the Metro Times in an interview that there are other music artists who have used the term f*ggot in their songs, so why is it different when he uses the term? He continued, “Let’s say if I say something f***ed up about Christopher Reeve, you know what I mean? Just something totally off-the-cuff. That’s really f***ed up, but how is it any different than what South Park is doing? Or Family Guy? I’ve always kinda felt, like, why am I special?”
Eminem has also been criticized over his music videos, and he also discussed his video ‘We Made You’, which has an impersonator of Jessica Simpson. In the video, the impersonator is fat, which Eminem says is his way of allowing people to look back in time and remember the things that were going on in that specific moment. The rapper noted that he felt a little conflicted about doing the Jessica thing. In the video when he says, “Jessica Simpson, sing the chorus,” they were going to have a Jessica impersonator come out to sing, but then the real Jessica Simpson got fat. “I mean, not really fat, but she certainly got fat for … well, Jessica Simpson!”, he added. They wanted to keep with the current events in pop culture for the time, because Eminem looks at his videos like they are time capsules.
In the most recent controversy over the rapper’s music, there has been criticism about ‘Bagpipes From Baghdad’, which features lines about Nick Cannon, Mariah Carey’s husband. After all is said done, though, this has not been the first controversy of Eminem’s music, and definitely will not be last.
