There are now many Chrysler dealerships closing across the nation, with about 3,200 set to close, and 789 of that are to be eliminated by June 9th. Even some dealerships who didn’t expect to close were given word on Tuesday through UPS mail. A lot of these locations were very involved in their communities, and losing a business that is this big will affect whole cities while tens of thousands of jobs will be lost.

The dealerships that are targeted for closing by June 9th do have the option to appeal the decision, however. Most of them are struggling just to pay the bills and stay afloat though. The worst of times are here now for Chrysler, whose sales are down from last year by 46% and over $16.8 billion. The company, which is based in Detroit, has already filed Chapter 11 and is in bankruptcy right now.

The Chrysler line includes Dodge, Dodge Trucks, and Jeep as well. Some expected closings include: 47 in Ohio, 40 in Michigan, and 14 in the metro area of Detroit. It is anticipated that the deal between Fiat and the company will cost as many as 40,000 workers’ their jobs, or more than the total US workforce of the group.

On average, Chrysler dealerships were selling 303 automobiles per showroom, which is much less than the 1,292 average for Toyota dealers and 1,219 average for Honda dealers. Peter Grady, the director of dealer operations for the group, said in a court filing that around one-quarter of their current dealers carry about half of the US sales for the company.
