Bauer Publishing’s Carla Sosenko Talks of Klippel Trenaunay Syndrome
Carla Sosenko, one of Bauer Publishing’s freelance writers and a full-time copy editor, has revealed in Marie Claire’s new issue that she suffers from Klippel Trenaunay Syndrome, which is a potentially fatal disorder. She explains in the article that she was born with this.
In the article, she writes that this means, for her, that her right leg is bigger than her left and slightly trails when she walks. Her back, she describes, is a fatty, uneven slab and there is a dense lump above her waist. Sosenko also has a big port-wine stain that reaches from around her torso to her right thigh.
According to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, Klippel Trenaunay Syndrome is a congenital circulatory disorder which is usually noticed with benign growths on the skin, varicose veins, and arteriovenous abscesses. The disorder can also be seen with fused fingers or toes, as well as extra digits, says the Institute. It is believed that the disorder occurs early during the developmental stages of an embryo.
Although there isn’t a cure for Klippel Trenaunay Syndrome, the disorder is treated symptomatically. Discrepancies in the size of limbs can be treated with orthopedic devices and surgery, while skin lesions can be given laser surgery treatments.
The complications that Klippel Trenaunay Syndrome brings on, such as skin infections and blood clots, make the disorder life-threatening, according to the Institution. Both heaviness and pain in the limbs that are affected are a big concern as well.
