‘Nurse Jackie’ Ordered for Second Season
Showtime renewed ‘Nurse Jackie’, the medical comedy drama, for a second season only a day after the premier of the series on Monday night. About 1.35 million viewers tuned into the show at 10:30pm Monday night, while another 350,000 tuned in to watch the encore at 11:30pm. Combined, this makes the ‘Nurse Jackie’ premier the largest for an original Showtime series since 2004.
The next season will feature twelve episodes, and production on the season will begin at the end of the summer so that it will be ready for a premier in 2010.
To sum up the season one premier of the show, nurse Jackie is an ED nurse at the All Saint Hospital in New York City, who was already snorting painkillers, having an affair with the pharmacist at the hospital, forging the signature of a deceased patient to make him an organ donor, telling a new arrogant doctor to stay the f*** out of her way, and flushing the severed ear of a rapist down the toilet, all during the first episode.
It was reported by the New York Daily News on Tuesday that the New York State Nurses Association requested that the Showtime network add a disclaimer at the beginning of every episode. They said that the character in the show doesn’t care about violating the nurse’s code of ethics repeatedly. However, officials at the network have denied their request, saying that ‘Nurse Jackie’ is a fictional show and its purpose is solely to entertain. They believe that viewers will clearly differentiate the show from the nursing profession as a whole.
