‘Next to Normal’ to be Briefly Taken Over by Kyle Dean Massey

Kyle Dean Massey is set to take over the Tony Award winning musical ‘Next to Normal’ as Gabe, in place of Aaron Tveit. Recently, Massey was seen in ‘Altar Boyz’ as Matthew and in ‘Xanadu’ as Thalia. He was set to start in his role on Tuesday and will be Aaron Tveit’s replacement until September 6th.

Tveit is leaving the cast of the musical so that he can star in the world premiere production of ‘Catch Me If You Can’, which is a collaboration of a book, music, and lyrics by Terrence McNally, Marc Shaiman, and Scot Wittman.

‘Next to Normal’ was written by Brian Yorkey and Tom Kitt. It has won three Tony Awards recently for best leading actress in a musical (Alice Ripley), best score, and best orchestrations. The ‘Next to Normal’ musical is directed by Michael Grief, and also starring in the show is Tony nominated J. Robert Spencer, Jennifer Damiano, Louis Hobson, and Adam Chanler-Berat.

According to David Stone, a producer of the show, the musical is a contemporary musical, exploring how a suburban household deals with crisis and shows how far parents will go in order to keep the world of their family intact and themselves sane. Other producers include Pacrick Catullo, Barbara Whitman, James L. Nederlander, and Second Stage Theatre.

The production features costume designs by Jeff Mahshie, set design by Mark Wendland, sound design by Brian Ronan, and lighting design by Kevin Adams. Also included in the creative team is AnnMarie Milazzo (vocal arrangements), Michael Starobin (orchestrations), Charlie Alterman (musical direction), and Sergiio Trujillo (musical staging).
