Walkouts in Britains power and oil plants
Power and oil plant workers came together this week in a mass wildcat walkout protesting against the sacking of workers at a refinery near Grimsby. “The entire industry will shut down,” activists warned, adding that electricity supplies could be hit hard.
It all began when almost 700 workers at the Lindsey oil refinery were sacked when they downed tools in a protest against dozens of their colleagues being laid off. Over a thousand workers from Teesside joined the strike action, while over in Ellesmere Port around a further 450 also packed up work.
Troubled flared at the new £200 million unit in Lindsey when a contractor fired 51 staff, while another employer was hiring new staff.
Total, the French petrol giant, said all the employees that went on the un-sanctioned strike could have their jobs back if they apply before Monday at 17:00. “Total will soon realise they have unleashed a monster. If they get away with this it will be a turkey cull. Workers will be decimated and unskilled employees from abroad will be brought in on the cheap,” said one of the disgruntled 647 that were sacked.
Strike action has been going on all week and so far moves to put talks together have failed. Downing Street stepped in and implored those workers to re-apply for their jobs by the cut-off date of Monday.
