American mum pays the price for illegal downloading

Single mum Jammie Thomas-Rasset was shocked at the fine handed down to her by a court in Minneapolis. The court ruled that the mother of four would have to pay $1.92 million for posting 24 songs on an illegal download site.

“There’s no way they’re ever going to get that. You can’t get blood out of a turnip,” said Thomas-Rasset to bemused journalists.

Attorneys confirmed that they were going to appeal the decision. “There really is a problem. She’s been fined $1.9million for stealing 24 songs that went for about $1.99 on iTunes, there’s no way that can be the correct result,” said Kiwi Camara one of the attorney’s.

The music industry have seen sales decline over the years and they firmly blame illegal downloading sites like that which Jammie used. However there are now legal sites from which songs can be downloaded and correct royalties are paid out, but instead of the whole album being purchased, individual tracks are.

Over the past few years figures suggest that over 35,000 individuals have been threatened with legal action, most being settled before going to court for around $4,000. Back in December music industry personal said they were not going to target lone persons anymore and instead target the Internet companies that provide illegal file sharing sites.
