Qantas cancels orders for Boeing Dreamliner

The biggest customer of the new Boeing 787 Dreamliner has just cancelled an order for 15 planes and put another 15 on-hold until further notice. This another blow to Boeing who have had to delay the maiden test flight of the 787 because of structural weakness.

Qantas have stated that the cancellation has nothing to do with any problems Boeing are having with production. This is the first time Qantas have cancelled orders for planes, they have also grounded some planes and cut staff in an effort to save money in the current economic climate.

The Australian airline are still one of Boeing’s biggest customers and have 50 planes on order. The first batch of planes is due three years later than scheduled in 2013 and will be assigned to Jetstar a part of Qantas.

“The agreement we have reached with Boeing will provide greater certainty going forward in terms of our fleet renewal and growth strategies as well as broader resource planning and matching capacity with demand,” said chief executive of Qantas, Alan Joyce.

There are hints that Qantas/Jetstar are thinking of pulling the plug altogether on the Dreamliner planes, which could damage the growth of the Jetstar side who plan to enter Europe with budget flights.
