‘Transformers’ Beats ‘Ice Age’ and ‘Public Enemies’ Opens Strong
The computer generated robots of ‘Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen’ have beat out the prehistoric creatures of ‘Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs’, despite reports that the two films tied at the box office this weekend. On Sunday, box office tracking services said that the weekend box office was a tie between the two movies, when they each sold about $43 million in tickets at theaters across North America.
However, studio figures were updated on Monday morning and have revealed that ‘Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen’ remained in the number 1 spot over the weekend with $42.4 million in ticket sales. Then ‘Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs’, which is the third film in the series, made $41.6 million, according to 20th Century Fox.
The box office figures that were revealed originally on Sunday were based on actual ticket sales for Friday and Saturday, as well as estimated figures by the studio for Sunday. Sometimes the estimated ticket sales for Sundays can be a little off from the actual figures, and this was the case for ‘Ice Age’ since it is harder to anticipate how interested children will be in animated films.
Meanwhile, ‘Public Enemies’ had a strong weekend debut. It had a larger three-day opening weekend than any other gangster movie, aside from ‘The Departed’ and ‘American Gangster’, with $26.1 million in ticket sales. Additionally, it grossed $41 million during its five-day debut, coming withing striking distance of the $43 million grossed by ‘American Gangster’. The film is also the third largest three-day opening for Johnny Depp.
