‘Bruno’ Teen-friendly Version to be Released in UK July 24
Universal Pictures will release a more teen-friendly version of ‘Bruno’, starring Sacha Baron Cohen, in the United Kingdom on July 24, taming down the film for the younger crowd. The film will be released alongside the currently showing film in hopes of gaining a bigger audience among those under the age of 18. This will the first time that two versions of the same film will be shown at the same time in the United Kingdom.
David Kosse, the president of the studio, said that after the film was launched last weekend, there were hundreds of teens under the age of 18 who were turned away from theaters throughout the UK. They have seen an opportunity to service the audience, he said, which should help with the gross of the movie as well.
Universal Pictures doesn’t plan to make similar cuts for other overseas markets where they have released the film, including Switzerland, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Australia, Belgium, Germany, South Africa, and Austria. He says that this is simply due to them having significantly lower ratings for the film in these areas.
Across Canada and the United States, ‘Bruno’ is rated R and had a respectable launch over the weekend with $30.6 million in tickets sales at the box office. However, while the film sold $14.4 million in tickets on Friday, sales dropped sharply afterward by almost 40% on Saturday with only $8.8 million. This isn’t good for the prospects of the film to be a big hit like ‘Borat’, which had a $128.5 million gross domestically and $133.1 million overall.
