‘Watchmen’ Takes Over DVD and Blu-ray Sales
During all of last week ‘Watchmen’ shot up the charts for national home video sales, as well as rental sales. This was the first week that the film was in stores, and 36% of the total unit sales came from the Blu-ray format of the movie.
Snagging the second spot on the home video sales and rental sales charts was ‘Coraline’. About 18% of the cartoon film’s unit sales came from Blu-ray discs, which is a surprising figure. ‘Knowing’, the Nicolas Cage movie, came in third in all three charts. For blu-ray sales, there were 17% sold out of its total units during its third week on shelves.
Other top selling DVDs and Blu-rays during the week included: ‘Robot Chicken: Star Wars - Episode II’, ‘Rison Break: The Final Break’, Psych: The Complete Third Season, and ‘Pushing Daisies: The Complete Second Season’.
Meanwhile, on Sunday Best Buy started offering the Warner Home Video film for only $9.99, which is a 65% cut in price from the standard $28.98 retail price, according to sources. They were also set to offer the Blu-ray edition of ‘Watchmen’ director’s cut with a digital copy for only $24.99 in their weekly newspaper ad. This is $3.50 more than the current charge from Amazon.
Eric Handler, a MKM Partners analyst, said that the fast reduction in price underscores the reality that mediocre films need to be set at a lower price in order to produce sales. ‘Watchmen’ only attracted a select fan base with $107.5 million in domestic box office sales during its debut in theaters. He added that this can make people wonder what the prices will be like for Black Friday (the day after Thanksgiving).
