Panasonic Persuades Managers to Boost Sales by Purchasing Products

Panasonic, who is targeting to axe 1,500 people while they face their first net loss for 6 years, is persuading their domestic managers to purchase the company’s products in order to boost sales, which amounts to at least YEN100,000.

The company, which is the largest electronics maker for consumers in the world, is persuading about 10,000 of their employees to buy these items by July, according to Takahisa Ito, a spokesman for the company. Ito says that the company predicts the initiative is going to generate sales of YEN1 billion. The employees are not going to be required to report on what they purchased or where the purchase was made, he added.

Ito also said that the company requested their employees to purchase products in 2002, which was the last recession. Internal campaigns such as these happen often, he continued, but this is the first time that they have set specific targets and timetables for sales in 7 years.

On February 4th, Pansonic said that they now expect a YEN380 billion net loss for the year to end March 31st, while the consumer demand for appliances, cameras, and televisions decline during the global recession. Makoto Uenoyama, the Director of Panasonic, said that along with cutting workers, the business will be initially shutting down 27 factories, and other closures are likely to come.

Panasonic is seeking the purchase of Sanyo Electronic in order to become the largest rechargeable battery maker in the world. They plan to book YEN345 billion in costs related to reorganizing their operations during the year to end March 31st.
