Trouble brewing for health care reform

It seems that US President Barack Obama might still have some explaining to do when it comes to his pet project the health care reform, which has been coming under fire from all sides in recent months.

This week Obama was forced to defend the reform once more. The president publically pitched his plan to both conservative talk radio and his own liberal supporters on Thursday, while denying a challenge from a backer that he was “bucklin’ a little bit” under Republican criticism.

Obama made a broadcast from the White House Diplomatic Reception Room to Philadelphia-based radio talk show host Michael Smerconish. During the broadcast he told one caller that: “I guarantee you … we are going to get health care reform done. And I know that there are a lot of people out there who have been hand-wringing, and folks in the press are following every little twist and turn of the legislative process. You know, passing a big bill like this is always messy.”

Despite the efforts of the president it seems that the bill, which would provide health coverage to nearly 50 million Americans, is losing momentum. Public backing for the bill has also slipped in opinion polls and Obama may have to work extra hard to regain confidence in the plan.
