Campaign to make drinkers more aware
May 21, 2008
According to research for the Government, three out of four people do not know how much alcohol it is safe to drink.
The research also said that 77% of people questioned do not realize how many units are in a typical large glass of wine, even thought 83% claimed to know what a unit of alcohol is.
A large glass on wine contains three units, however 55% think it contains two units. Three out of five people surveyed did not know a double gin and tonic contains two units, the same as an average pint of beer.
The Government has launched a £10m campaign to combat alcohol abuse and binge drinking. £6m will be used to help people “know their limits” and to stay within the recommended daily limits for regular drinkers which are two or three units for women and three or four units for men. The other £4m will target young people and binge drinking.
The Public Health minister, Dawn Primarlo said “Glass sizes have grown larger and the strength of many wines and beers have increased so its no wonder some of us have lost track of our alcohol consumption.”
Sir Liam Donaldson, the chief medical officer said “It is important that people are aware of how much alcohol their drinks contain and the associated links with health harm.”
