Nokia fans angry at N-Gage restrictions
May 26, 2008
Users of Nokia’s N-Gage gaming services have reacted angrily after discovering that games they have bought do not work on other handsets.
The games are locked to the mobile phone they are bought from, rather than being tied to a user account. This means that if a handset was upgraded or swapped for another Nokia N-Gage compatible handset, the games will not be transferred with them. Instead the games will have to be re-purchased.
The story was first broke on the All about n-Gage fan site. The site highlights the difference in Nokia’s policies on music and games. Songs purchased through Nokia’s Music Store can be transferred to a new handset but games cannot. The website warns that Nokia’s N-Gage policy will affect its biggest supporters.
Nokia have said that the activation codes that only work on the device where they were first activated are used to protect games against piracy. In a statement Nokia have said “Our policy is that N-Gage activation codes only work on the device where they were first activated. If users repair their device, the activation codes will be reissued.”
