Woolworths to stop selling CD singles
May 27, 2008
Woolworths have announced they are to stop selling CD singles.
The group who own Woolworths have said the CD format was in “terminal decline” and will stop being sold in August. Sales of CD’s have been hit by the popularity of downloading music from the internet. Woolworths will still stock one-off releases, such as the X-factor winner which sells thousands of copies. Figures show the market is a sixth of what it was eight years ago and a third of what they were in 2007.
In 1999, 78 million CD, tape and vinyl singles were bought but this fell to only 8 million CD singles in 2007.
Woolworth’s commercial director said “Digital downloading is now the true customer choice for listening and purchasing single music tracks. CD’s are alive and well for album sales but unfortunately the physical singles market is in terminal decline.”
The company has revamped its website and it now covers music, games, video and mobile content.
