May 30, 2008
The next operating system from Microsoft will have multi touch features as an alternative to the mouse.
Microsoft’s last operating system (OS) the problematic Vista OS did not receive good reception. It’s hoped the latest OS will be better received when it is released in 2009.
The finger tip interface lets user traces routes on maps, play the piano, paint pictures and enlarge and shrink photos.
Microsoft chairman Bill Gates said “The way you interact with the system will change dramatically.” He also said the new Windows 7 will have new forms of communication and interaction. “Today almost all the interaction is keyboard - mouse. Over years to come, the role of speech, vision, ink -all of those things- will be huge.”
Chief executive Steve Ballmer said the demo of the multi touch screen was “a small snippet” of the newest version of Windows.
Even though Vista did not receive positive reviews from users Microsoft still shipped 150million copies of the programme.
With numerous new devices using touch screen technology, Microsoft are hoping Windows 7 will change the way people interact with their PC’s in the future.
Windows product manager Chris Flores wrote in a blog post: “Touch enabled surfaces are popping up everywhere including laptop touch pads, cell phones, remote controls, GPS devices and much more.”
