Real Madrid prepares to target Steven Gerrard

Real Madrid say that they will try to sign Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard to the team next summer. It has been well publicized that Florentino Perez, the clubs president and Jorge Valdano, the clubs technical director have had their eyes on Gerrard for some time now. Back in January Gerrard said that he was not interested in leaving Liverpool for Real Madrid when the subject came up. However that was at a time when Liverpool was fighting Manchester United for the premier league title. Liverpool’s fortunes this season could mean that Gerrard will be more open to offers from other clubs. He very nearly left to join Chelsea in 2005 but made a last minute decision not to join Abramovich’s club and remain at Anfield.

Gerrard is said to be desperate to see Liverpool take the title. Rafa Benitez would also like to see a reversal in Liverpool’s fortunes as his team has now lost four games in a row. Last summer Liverpool lost midfielder Xabi Alonso to Real Madrid when he moved from Anfield in a deal worth £28.8 million. Liverpool fans will now be crossing their fingers that they don’t lose their captain when Real Madrid potentially offers £30 million for him next year.
