Police Offer Safety Tips for Halloween

Halloween is coming up at the end of the week, and kids are getting prepared for their night out on the hunt for the best and most candy. This has prompted police departments all over to offer parents tips on how to keep their kids safe during the holiday night of fun.

There is a long list of tips, but here are some main things to remember. Parents should make sure that their children (at least any under 12 years old) are supervised by an adult or older responsible youth. It is also good if a route is discussed and planned for the children, and make sure they travel in groups and in familiar areas along the route. In case a child is separated from their group, it is good if they have a piece of paper with their name and address on it pinned in their pocket.

Parents should make sure their children know to only stop at homes that are well lit. They will also need to be warned of the dangers of entering a stranger’s house or apartment. Their costumes and candy bags/sacks should also feature reflective tape or parts if they are going to be out past dark.

Police departments are also advising drivers of trick-or-treaters. Drivers need to be on the lookout for children that may dart out from between cars parked on the street and those that may be walking on curbs, medians or the side of the road. They should also be careful of children wearing dark clothing, as well as enter/exit alleys and driveways carefully.
