Contaminated Beef Recalled after 2 E. Coli Deaths

Reports have come in that 2 people have died from an outbreak of E. coli that could be linked to beef. The outbreak is on the east coast of the US, where one in New York and another in New Hampshire have died, while another 16 are in the hospital and 28 are sick from it.

There have been a total of 28 people to contract an illness associated with the E. coli outbreak as of October 28. According to Lola Scott Russel with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), all of them, except 3, are from the Northeast, while 18 of them live in New England. Hemolytic uremic syndrome, a cause of kidney failure, has come up in two of the cases. She continued that the New York patient who died had previous health problems, while the New Hampshire patient’s death is still being investigated.

All of the patients are between the ages of 1 and 84, while 86% off them are male. A majority of them became sick from the outbreak between mid-September and mid-October, which is when the CDC and Department of Agriculture started to investigate. The focal point is very early ground beef, says Russell.

There has now been a recall on over 545,000 pounds of beef from Fairbank Farms’ Ashville, New York base. The product was distributed to Northeast and mid-Atlantic states. The company says that the meat can be returned to the store where it was purchased for a full credit. Several popular chains - Ford Brothers, Price Chopper, Trader Joe’s, ACME, Giant Food Stores, Shaw’s and BJ’s - sold the beef, for which has the number “ET 492″ on the package label.
