Daily Mail Pays Kate Winslet £25,000

Kate Winslet announced that she would sue the Daily Mail newspaper in May for libel damages on allegations claiming she lied about her fitness routine. A settlement was agreed on at London’s High Court on Tuesday, and Kate accepted £25,000, which she will donate to charity.

The lawsuit was related to an article the newspaper published in January that accused Kate of lying to the public about the amount of time she exercises. They suggested that she was dishonest in an Elle magazine interview, during which she said she relies on Pilates DVDs since she doesn’t have time to go to a gym. A retraction and apology was printed by the Daily Mail in September.

In a statement released yesterday, Kate said that she is happy the Daily Mail has apologized for the false allegations. She was upset over the allegations that she lied about her exercise routine, she continued, and felt that she was responsible for requesting an apology to demonstrate her commitment to the views she has always expressed about body issues, including exercise and diet. She strongly believes that women need to be encouraged to accept themselves, so it was an unacceptable hypocrisy accusation that she was a liar, Kate added.

Kate has supported healthy viewpoints regarding women’s bodies other times as well. In a previous interview with the New York Times, she says that she is comfortable as she is, including the imperfections, and she doesn’t feel like she has to hide them. She adds that she believes it’s important for women to be portrayed as real women on screen, and will support that until the day she dies.
