Simon Mann Meets Five Year Old Son for the First Time

Simon Mann landed in Britain just days ago to meet his five and half year old son, Arthur, for the first time since his birth. Mann who was sentenced to 34 years in prison for his part in plotting to stage a coup in Equatorial Guinea was pardoned by President Obiang last week.

Mann, who was arrested in Zimbabwe, in 2004 and jailed shortly after for attempting to plan a coup which would install opposition leader Severo Moto into power in Equatorial Guinea. After being found guilty of plotting the coup, Mann was sentenced to 34 years in prison and transported to the infamous Black Beach prison in the West African state.

Wednesday, Mann arrived back in the UK and was reunited with his wife Amanda and got to meet his, now five year old son. Mann’s son was a newborn when he was arrested on an airport tarmac back in March 2004. Mann has said that while in prison he dreamed about the day he would meet his infant son.

After being pardoned, Mann has released details of the coup to British authorities naming Mark Thatcher, son of former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, as part of the management team for the coup. Mark Thatcher was also found guilty of funding the coup. Although Mr. Thatcher has denied knowledge of the coup, he released a statement yesterday expressing relief that Mann was home safely.

While in prison at Black Beach, Mann was visited on three occasions by British detectives, and his expected to cooperate with authorities investigating further persons involved in the coup plots from 2004. Former associates of Mann’s could be subject to further questioning if Mann released more details to authorities.
