BBC Executives’ Salaries Revealed

The salaries for the top 100 BBC bosses have been published online. The details include business-related expenses as well and were released in line with plans that director general Mark Thompson laid out in July.

The move was welcomed by Shadow Culture Secretary Jeremy Hunt, but he said that the BBC also needed to publish details of how much they pay their celebrity talent. BBC chief operating officer Caroline Thomson said that they will publish these details every quarter and will have a full figure on how much they spend on talent not long after the new year.

The figures revealed show that nearly all of the more than 100 top executives are earning over £100,000. The worst thing about these numbers though, is that the broadcaster’s “rewards director”, Robert Johnston, is being paid £196,550 to handle matters relating to benefits and compensation for the company’s employees. It only gets worse though!

Johnston is already making more than Prime Minister Gordon Brown’s £194,250, but Thompson’s basic salary (£664,000) is more than three times that of Brown’s. However, Thompson was paid a total of £834,000 last year.

Other details included in the published figures were that the senior executives spent £30,315 on hospitality and £46,110 on taxis during just the first three months of this financial year. It’s already been made clear that something needs to be done about the company’s spending habits, but these numbers only clarify that more.

The BBC Trust announced at the end of last month that the corporation is undertaking a series of measures in regard to their senior management. They intend to cut pay by 25%, freeze bonuses and current pay for senior staff, as well as axe senior staff members during the next three-and-half years.
