2005 Chateau Petrus is best vintage in a century
2005 was a great year for wines made in the Bordeaux region of France and for Chateau Petrus it was a fantastic year. Experts are claiming that it is probably the best vintage for over a century with bottles already being valued at around £4,000. There is no way of telling just how expensive the king of Pomerol will be when it is actually drinkable in ten years time but those fortunate enough to have been at a recent tasting held at the City of London’s Vintners’ Hall are already saying that the wine is better than previous great vintages such as the 1982 and the 1998.
Jonathan Stevens from fine wine retailers Farr Vintners says that the 2005 vintage is set to be a subtle wine with great complexity and lots of fruit. Petrus is legendry for being the wine of choice for the super rich and celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay has even named a restaurant after it. Older vintages of the wine already go for £12,000 per bottle at his establishment.
The reason for the excitement was 2005’s almost perfect grape growing conditions in the Bordeaux region. A long, hot summer meant that the grapes were able to achieve a very concentrated state.
Only 2,400 twelve bottle cases were produced for the vintage meaning that along with a great taste the wine will have a rarity value which will only allow the very rich to have access to it. It is unlikely that the greatest vintage ever will be seen anywhere outside bonded warehouses in the U.K. for some time as those lucky enough to have obtained a case will watch their investment rocket in value.
