Actor Edward Woodward Dies

Actor Edward Woodward, who is best known for playing as a policeman in “The Wicker Man”, as well as a vigilante in “The Equalizer” television series, died on Monday at the age of 79. The Golden Globe winner had been suffering from many illnesses, one of which was pneumonia. He passed away in Royal Cornwall Hospital, which is close to his house in Cornwall.

Janet Glass, his agent, said that Woodward was loved and admired around the world for his unforgettable roles. She added that he was courageous and fine in real life and never lost his humor and brave spirit during his illness.

Woodward’s career was full of on stage performances and parts in numerous films and television series, and he even recorded 12 albums of songs with a tenor voice. He also won many awards for his roles, including: Television Actor of the Year in 1969 and 1970; Sun Awards’ Best Actor in 1970, ‘71, and ‘72; BAFTA Awards’ Best Actor in 1970; Golden Globe Awards’ Best Actor in a Dramatic TV Series in 1987 for his role in “The Equalizer”; and Emmy Awards’ nominee for “The Equalizer” in 1986 and 1990. He was also made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire in 1978.

In 1996, Woodward had triple bypass surgery, and then he quit smoking after having two heart attacks. Then at the beginning of 2003, he was diagnosed with prostate cancer. He was born in south London and is survived by Michele Dotrice, his wife of 22 years, as well as four children - Tim, 56; Peter, 53; Sarah, 46; and Emily Beth, 26.
